Baroque architecture, which began in the early 1600s, is a very early but very beautiful style of architecture.

Italy in the 17th century.

By adapting Renaissance architecture to a new theatrical, sculptural style, Baroque architecture evolved into a very fanciful, extravagant style of structural design.

While the Renaissance style was intended for the upper crust of society, Baroque architecture was originally intended to enhance the wealth and power of the Roman Catholic Church. Concerns were raised about light, shade, and color intensity, and Baroque found secular expression in grand palaces, first in France, then throughout Europe.
If you were to visit France today, one of the highlights of Baroque architecture would be the Chateau de Maisons.

St. Peter's Basilica in Rome is one of the most well-known examples of Baroque architecture. It is the most visible structure within Vatican City. It stands out in the Roman skyline thanks to its towering dome.

Baroque structures are massive in size and ornamentation. As baroque spread throughout Europe, it took on the appearance of European Colonialism.

The Greenwich Hospital in London, England, is yet another stunning example of Baroque architecture. Greenwich Hospital, founded in 1694 as the Royal Naval Hospital for sailors, is famous for its Baroque Painted Hall, which was painted in honor of King William and Queen Mary.

With its high gold painted ceiling, the chapel is a magnificent example of not only Baroque architecture, but also Baroque art.
