Gothic Architecture

 Gothic Architecture

Cathedrals and abbeys were designed to be landmark structures, rising high above the rest of the town's structures. Gothic architecture was also used in castles and palaces, as well as government buildings and universities. At the time, Italy was building classical structures and saw European structures as garish and showy.

Most European cathedrals, abbeys, and parish churches constructed between the 12th and 16th centuries have intricate, almost gaudy structures with peaks, spires, and flying buttresses.

These architectural feats are fairly common in Gothic architecture. It was also used in castles and palaces, as well as government buildings and universities, but was less common in private residences due to the high cost of construction.

The name comes from Giorgio Vasari, who used it to describe a culture that was considered rude and barbaric. At the time, Italy was building classical structures and saw European structures as garish and showy.
Local resources, such as various grades of limestone and colored marble, are used in Gothic architecture.

This was not only a new building style, but architects were also able to use new technology. The ogival and pointed arches were essential elements of Gothic architecture.

The interior -walls-, which emphasized verticality and light, were not the solid ones we are used to seeing, but rather resembled the skeleton of a building. The finished effect was clustered columns, pointed ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses.

Cathedrals and abbeys were designed to be landmark structures, rising high above the rest of the town's structures.
The massive towers, pinnacles, and spires that loomed over the town were another fantastic feature of the Gothic architecture in these buildings. The pointed arches on the inside emphasized the height and added to the decoration.

Art Deco Architecture

 Art Deco Architecture

Art Deco architecture was popular between 1920 and 1939. The Art Deco movement influenced not only architecture, but also interior design, industrial design, and visual arts. Today, we see a revival of the old, with people caring enough to rebuild or refurbish the beautiful designs.

Art Deco architecture was popular between 1920 and 1939. The Art Deco movement influenced not only architecture, but also interior design, industrial design, and visual arts such as fashion, painting, graphic arts, and film.

The movement was a mash-up of various styles, including cubism, modernism, Bauhaus, Art Nouveau, and Futurism, and its popularity peaked in the Roaring Twenties.

Unlike many previous architectural styles, which had political or philosophical underpinnings, Art Deco Architecture was purely decorative.

Beautiful, elegant, functional, and modern design. The Chrysler Building in New York is one of the most well-known examples of Art Deco architecture in the United States.

The stunning Art Deco spire was constructed between 1928 and 1930. The Streamline Moderne period followed closely behind the Art Deco period. The emphasis was primarily on developing technologies such as automobiles and aviation.

The majority of Art Deco architecture is made of man-made materials. The most common are glass and stainless steel. Throughout the structures, lines were very symmetrical and repetitive.

Art Deco, which was popular during the Great Depression because of its simplicity and practicality, reminded people of better times and gave them hope of one day reliving them.

Art Deco's life was cut short by World War II. People began to see it as gaudy and a false image of luxury, but it served as a springboard to modernism, which lasted well into the 1960s.

Today, we see a revival of the old, with people caring enough to rebuild or refurbish the beautiful designs of Art Deco architecture, or even begin modernizing and blending it with contemporary styles. However, as you travel the country, you will notice that many large cities still have grand Art Deco structures standing.

Architecture Building Design

Architecture Building Design

Architecture combines functionality and aesthetics to create the structures in which we live, work, and play. Each era has its own architectural style, ranging from Baroque, Greco-Roman, Art Deco, and Victorian to American Colonial, Prairie, and Bauhaus.

The science and art of designing building45s and other structures is known as architecture. It can also include the design of surrounding environments, towns, and landscapes.

An architect is someone who specializes in architecture. Architecture has played an important role in our entire world's history. For there has always been some kind of architecture wherever there have been buildings or structures that were safe to inhabit.

Architecture combines functionality and aesthetics to create the structures in which we live, work, and play. Every structure, from the smallest 1 bedroom home to the grandest palace or largest cathedral, is based on some form of architecture.

Architectural designs evolve over time and in space. Each era has its own architectural style, ranging from Baroque, Greco-Roman, Art Deco, and Victorian to American Colonial, Prairie, and Bauhaus. Lines, materials, structure, and symbolism all contribute to the various architectural styles.

Architecture styles range from subtle to garish, and materials used range from lumber to limestone. However, most early architectural styles made use of abundant local materials.

In Greece, for example, where limestone was abundant, the majority of structures were built from this natural material. And because marble was not only scarce but also difficult to transport, it was used sparingly and usually only for ornamentation.

Saltbox houses were built from timber in Colonial America because it was so readily available and most properties had an abundance of it, so it cost next to nothing. These Saltbox houses were also put together with joints to save money because the cost of nails was an unnecessary expense.

Colonial American Architecture

Colonial American Architecture

A trip across the United States will show you stunning architecture from coast to coast. However, during the 1780s, the most popular architectural style was the American Colonial.

The houses were mostly constructed by wealthy Anglo Americans and came in a variety of styles depending on where you lived. These homes, also known as Colonial Georgian homes, were the first to grace the United States' colonies.

A saltbox is a prime example of early American Colonial architecture. The Saltbox is essentially a wooden frame house with a steeply pitched roof that slopes down to the back.

Its flat front has two stories while the back has only one, making the sides unequal but distinctly resembling an old salt box, which was a wooden box with a lid where salt was kept.

A simple name for a simple home style The chimney was generally centrally located, giving the house the appearance of a box with a lid and a handle to lift it from a distance.

Other distinguishing features of American Colonial architecture include the square, symmetrical shape; the front door located directly in the center of the house; and the even, straight line of windows throughout.

An entryway and a staircase are usually found inside the front door. All other rooms branch off of these. Typically, they were built of brick with wood trim, but with homes like the Saltbox, they were also timber frame homes built with woodworking joints rather than metal nails because metal nails were expensive. Wood siding was also used on saltbox houses.

Architecture by Adobe

Architecture by Adobe

Adobe's architecture was used in some of the first structures.Adobe is a fibrous material composed of sand, clay, straw, dung, or other fibrous materials.

The adobe is then formed into bricks with frames and sun-dried. The structures become extremely durable, similar to cob or mud bricks. They are primarily used in hot, arid climates because they keep cool in the summer and slowly release heat in the winter.

The same mixture, minus the straw, is used as mortar when assembling dried adobe bricks to form a structure. Some cultures even discovered that lime-based cement could be used to make plaster to protect against the wet months.

The thickness of the adobe bricks plays an important role in the architecture. It is primarily responsible for keeping the structures cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

The Bam Citadel was the largest structure ever built from Adobe. However, it was severely damaged by an earthquake in 2003.

The Huaca del Sol in Peru is another magnificent adobe structure made of over 100 million signed bricks.

The citadel of Arg-e Bam, built as recently as 500 BCE, may be the world's largest adobe architecture structure.

The Bam Citadel covers an area of 180,000 square meters and is surrounded by walls that are 6-7 meters high and 1815 meters long, all made of Adobe. No human or animal could enter the city once the gates were closed. The city was self-contained, with wells, gardens, and cattle all contained within its walls.

When it came to putting a roof on the structure, adobe architecture was a little different. Roofs were typically constructed from lengths of wood or metal. Then, over the top of a support structure, rows of dried adobe bricks are laid and plastered into place with more adobe.
